Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot is named Best Organic Wine!

Vougeot Premier CruThe Vougeot Premier Cru le Clos Blanc de Vougeot monopole 2010 from the Domaine de la Vougeraie is awarded the IWC Trophy for Best Organic Wine on 18 July in London

Vougeot Premier Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2010 Monopole this year came away with three trophies for the first time:

  • The award for the World’s Best Chardonnay
  • The award for Best French White Wine
  • The award for Best White Burgundy

In addition, it was among the white wines nominated for the World’s Best White award.

The Domaine de la Vougeraie’s Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2010, the “diamond set among rubies” that has existed for ten centuries, draws its special character from its limestone soil. The sacramental wine of the monks of Cîteaux from 1110, it still comes from the original plot which has never been sub-divided – an extremely rare thing in Burgundy. A mythic and mystical wine, it has the breadth and length of a Meursault combined with the intense minerality of a Chablis. The 2010 vintage did, however, undergo much stress, with unfavorable weather, lots of rot, quite low yields and a tricky start to ageing.

Fortunately, strict sorting during the harvest, the use of indigenous yeasts, the effects of biodynamic agriculture along with lengthy ageing and a late malolactic fermentation all combined to result in an exceptional wine, no doubt the best vintage from the Domaine de la Vougeraie to date. It is a complex and elegant wine, one which merits being laid down.
