1999: A powerful, tender and rich vintage.

The Domaine de la Vougeraie’s first vintage in 1999 was a generous one right across Burgundy, and is emblematic of the house style.

The 1999 millésime particularly suited the Vougeot terroir: the Clos Vougeot, from where we obtained a wine perfectly combining finesse and strength; the stately Musigny yielding just three-and-a-half pièces, which impressed us with its restraint, its limited expression in its youth; and the Vougeot Premier Cru Les Cras, which is reminiscent of its neighbor, Chambolle Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, with its elegance and velvety style, and which, in blind tastings, has stood up admirably to the grand crus.

The Clos Blanc de Vougeot gave us a wine with a power comparable to the greatest whites on the Côte de Beaune, but nonetheless unique. Our other monopole, Le Vougeot Clos du Prieuré was very rounded and full of citrus notes for the white, and indulgently sophisticated for the red – pure pleasure indeed.

In 1999 the wines were tender but rich. The vintage is one for great maturity – the greatest wines will age but they will all give a great deal of pleasure in their youth. All that is, except the Musigny!
