Horn dung: An essential fertilizerThe cow is one of the symbols of biodynamics, by its connection to the earth and through its horns to the sky. By extension, it represents the living and the sacred.
Cow dung has always been used as a very rich
natural fertilizer, and
cow horns make for an ideal receptacle because they are slightly porous, and allow air to pass through, slowly breaking down the contents. Dung-filled horns are buried in the soil over the winter.
By springtime, the dung has been broken down into a compost. It is then
diluted in water and
dynamized and used to help the recovery of life in the soil and the formation of humus. It also and it bolsters root growth, encouraging them to reach down even further into the soil
